The Ontario government's Long-Term Energy Plan, issued in November 2010, states that maintaining a clean, modern and reliable electricity system is the government's number one energy priority.
Ontario families, businesses and the economy rely on the efficiency and dependability of our electricity system every time a light or an electrical device is turned on.
In addition to keeping electricity flowing to power our modern world, we need a cleaner, more efficient system that won't compromise the health of current and future generations.
Rather than relying exclusively on large, centralized power plants transmitting power over long distances, Ontario's Green Energy and Economy Act and Long-Term Energy Plan call for the development of a diversified, low-carbon energy supply mix that:
-
Increases the use of renewable sources of energy including solar, wind, hydro and bioenergy
- Increases the use of localized generation from smaller, cleaner sources of electricity
-
Provides new opportunities for smaller power producers to become generators: individuals, small co-operatives, partnerships and aboriginal communities
