Solar energy is energy from the sun in the form of radiated heat and light. The sun's radiant energy can be used to provide lighting and heat for buildings and to produce electricity.

  1. Solar photovoltaics

    • Solar photovoltaic cells convert sunlight directly into electricity, which is either used immediately or stored for future use in batteries.
    • Under Ontario's Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) and MicroFIT programs, electricity produced by solar photovoltaics may be fed into the Ontario grid.

  2. Solar thermal

    • Solar collectors or panels are used to heat water or ventilation air for use in swimming pools, buildings, etc. Solar thermal can also be used in large-scale electric generation
